Resurgam
This 3×4 original oil painting comes in a vintage wood frame and beautifully wrapped, ready to hang or give to someone dear to you. These originals are vibrant, painted with the intention that they be hung in the dark corners of your home. They are not meant to be mere images of candles, but painted to give the illusion that they are actually giving off light through the careful use of chroma.
About this collection:
The idea for this collection came to me right around the summer solstice.
For the past few years I get quite melancholy around the longest day of the year. Some of the hardest moments of my life have happened during the darker days of autumn and, for me, the summer solstice begins a sort of decent into literal and metaphorical darkness. It may seem odd that I am drawn to painting candles during the height of summer, but to me it is painfully obvious: I am preparing for this coming darkness.
Perhaps you too brace yourself against the dark? We all face our own darkness and it is often very lonely. We are all somehow lonely, together.
This collection is for the ones keeping vigil—for those who need to see a visual reminder that they are not alone and their losses are not forgotten. My hope is that when you see these paintings in your home, you will remember all those who have also collected a piece from this series and know that you each hold a flame that will not be snuffed, burning in silent vigil for the darkest days you have and will face.
The title Resurgam (re sŏŏr′gäm) is a Latin word meaning “I will rise again.” I first encountered this word in the book Jane Eyre. It was the epitaph given to Jane’s childhood friend, Helen Burns, who died at thirteen. Helen was a symbol of faith, fortitude, and rising above adversity. She was Jane’s first friend and a guiding light even in her absence.
May your candle burn bright until we rise again,
Emily

This 5×7 original oil painting was made using the leftover paint from the Resurgam Collection and applied to the panel with a palette knife. It has a rich and thick application of paint and feels more impressionistic than the rest of the collection. This painting comes in a wood frame and beautifully wrapped, ready to hang or give to someone dear to you.

CAIRNS
Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:16 ESV
Cairns are used to mark many things. They can guide us on forgotten paths. They remind us that we are not the first to travel a trail, nor will we be the last. They sit, as T.S. Eliot would say, “at the still point of the turning world.” Cairns represent balance, contemplation, and guidance.
This collection is meant to be a reminder of the present—where we are right now—that we are invited to not merely live in the sorrows of the past or our worries for the future, but to attune our hearts to the crossroads that are ever before us. Cairns remind us of something we’ve forgotten.
May this piece honor your pilgrimage as “stones of remembrance,” and may you always find rest for your soul on the ancient paths.

May this piece honor your pilgrimage as “stones of remembrance,” and may you always find rest for your soul on the ancient paths.

Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.

In Grief 2
In Grief is a series created to honor the sacred places of grief in our lives. In these pieces, the black ink seems to take on a life of its own as it spreads and stains the paper. This process reminds me of grieving. We are uncomfortable by the unruliness of our grief. We would like grief to follow rules and reduce its flow and spread. But grief is not like that, it’s complicated, and does not follow a neat, linear path.
The 24k gold in these pieces represents the Holy Spirit communing with us in our losses. The Holy Spirit does not diminish, cover up, or rush our grief, but like the Japanese art of Kintsugi, redeems that which we believed was hopelessly broken. Depending on the light, this gold looks dim or brilliant, reminding me of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our grief: sometimes hidden and sometimes profoundly obvious.
This original piece is 9x12 in an 11x14 gold and black double mat. These pieces are created with ink and 24k gold leaf on 140lb paper. Please note that this listing is for a matted original and does not come with a frame or photo props.
May this piece be a small balm in grief.

++Ballochory is a term in botany used to describe a form of seed dispersal, also known as ballistic dispersal. Plant pods and fruits that utilize this dynamic method of dispersal burst open to scatter their seeds. It is an ending and beginning in one explosive moment.

Root of Virtue
Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.
—St. Francis De Sales
✨Do you hear that? The Lemon Balm is doing its work quietly and faithfully. It is not disturbed by the latest news. It is not wringing its hands in woe. It is generous in nature, reseeding itself often where it is not planted.
✨This print is for anyone who wants a reminder to be a presence of peace in this chaotic world, and to sow that peace generously.
✨The hand-painted gold sun represents life and the gold roots represent humility.
✨This listing is for one 11x14 plant print on 280gsm, acid-free paper. Each print hand-pressed, signed, and illuminated by hand with gouache paint. (NOTE: this print is on lightly brown-toned paper). “The word patience comes from the Latin verb patior which means “to suffer.” Waiting patiently is suffering through the present moment, tasting it to the full, and letting the seeds that are sown in the ground on which we stand grow into strong plants.”
—Henri Nouwen
✨After enduring the cold, damp winter, the fern slowly sends up its fiddleheads from the forest floor. They patiently unfurl their graceful fronds, leaving us with a reminder that there is a time and season for everything. Patience is not passive, but Nouwen says, “It is an active waiting in which we live the present moment to the full in order to find there the signs of the One we are waiting for.”

✨The Dandelion — scorned, weeded, and poisoned by lawn-lovers everywhere and yet Dandelions continue to do the work of life. They offer food to pollinators. Their deep and persistent roots pull up important nutrients so other plants can utilize them. Their wide-spread roots loosen and aerate hard ground.

“The meek shall inherit the earth.”
✨Plantain is a meek and lowly plant, yet it has traveled nearly everywhere mankind has gone, its seeds clinging to the boots of men. Plantain does not need or wait for the approval of anyone to do its humble work of repairing the earth and in its meekness, it has spread to the ends of the earth. Plantain is known for thriving in disturbed and poor soils. It is known as a powerful healing agent, not only for the soil, but for wounds, bites, and stings. Its job is to heal both mankind and the earth. Roses may be in the gardens of Kings, but plantain has inherited the earth.
✨This print is a reminder to do the humble and meek work set before you. It will bring healing to yourself and those around you.

“Magnanimous individuals…give us a taste of their deepest spirit without a trace of competition or rivalry. They have nothing to protect, nothing to promote. They simply have the fantastic ability to make us want to become more without making us feel less.”
—Jonathan R. Bailey
✨Herb Robert is about as humble of a plant as you will find. In fact, it even has a nickname “Stinking Bob” for the musky scent that it gives off when crushed. There is something incredibly magnanimous in this humble plant. It will actually absorb radiation in the soil and break it down. By nature, it will take what is toxic and transform it into something healing for its environment.
✨This print is for anyone who wants a reminder to live magnanimously in this world - to give of oneself without “competition or rivalry,” transforming toxic environments with a humble nature.

Fire & Water
This is a special limited collection of six original abstracts inspired by Psalm 66:
10 For you, O God, have tested us;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net;
you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
12 you let men ride over our heads;
we went through fire and through water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.
Why abstracts?
Before I studied art, I often wondered why artists who had abilities to paint realistically would create abstracts. I remembered being very surprised to find out that Picasso had exceptional realism skills. As I’ve grown in my abilities in classical realism I have found a renewed joy in abstracts. Abstracts are pure symbol. Abstracts have the ability to become more than a beautiful set of lines and colors but take on meaning and feeling in powerful ways. I think of abstracts like the dreamscape of art. In dreams we work out fears and hopes. In painting abstracts, I begin an intuitive process that leads me on a journey of discovery about the themes in my own life and heart. I hope you enjoy this new collection and find a piece that speaks to you too.
About this Piece:
This listing is for one original ink and silver composite abstract from the Fire & Water collection. This signed piece is 18x24 inches and comes unmatted/unframed and packaged in a clear protective sleeve. All orders of original art will be shipped in the beginning of the following month. For example, if you order this piece in August, it will be shipped to you in the beginning of September. Expeditated orders are sometimes possible if you contact me directly.
Thank you for your support, may you be brought to a place of abundance.
Peace and Love,
Emily

This is a special limited collection of six original abstracts inspired by Psalm 66:
10 For you, O God, have tested us;
you have tried us as silver is tried.
11 You brought us into the net;
you laid a crushing burden on our backs;
12 you let men ride over our heads;
we went through fire and through water;
yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.
