This listing is for a special edition print of the first painting from my new collection In Part. This collection will be a series of four carved and painted panels representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter. “Harbinger” is the debut painting representing spring. This collection was inspired by the verse from Corinthians that says:
“Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
I combined elements of wood carving and classical realism to produce the tension and illusion of both a flat and dimensional surface. I wanted a painting that represented the complexity of suffering and grief, which can feel like a carving out, a hollowing. This painting is about the irrational unknowing of these losses and the hope that can spring even in the darkest of seasons. It is a radical thing to sit in the unknowing and not despair.
In this painting we see a Hellebore (or Lenten Rose) springing from the flat background of the panel. I chose the hellebore for this painting because it is one of the first flowers to bloom before spring even arrives. It is often considered a harbinger of spring. Hellebores represent peace, serenity, and tranquility and bloom in harsh conditions when there are often no other signs of life around.
