Encore Edition Resurgam no. 11
This 5×7 original oil painting was made using the leftover paint from the Resurgam Collection and applied to the panel with a palette knife. It has a rich and thick application of paint and feels more impressionistic than the rest of the collection. This painting comes in a wood frame and beautifully wrapped, ready to hang or give to someone dear to you.
About this collection:
The idea for this collection came to me right around the summer solstice.
For the past few years I get quite melancholy around the longest day of the year. Some of the hardest moments of my life have happened during the darker days of autumn and, for me, the summer solstice begins a sort of decent into literal and metaphorical darkness. It may seem odd that I am drawn to painting candles during the height of summer, but to me it is painfully obvious: I am preparing for this coming darkness.
Perhaps you too brace yourself against the dark? We all face our own darkness and it is often very lonely. We are all somehow lonely, together.
This collection is for the ones keeping vigil—for those who need to see a visual reminder that they are not alone and their losses are not forgotten. My hope is that when you see these paintings in your home, you will remember all those who have also collected a piece from this series and know that you each hold a flame that will not be snuffed, burning in silent vigil for the darkest days you have and will face.
The title Resurgam (re sŏŏr′gäm) is a Latin word meaning “I will rise again.” I first encountered this word in the book Jane Eyre. It was the epitaph given to Jane’s childhood friend, Helen Burns, who died at thirteen. Helen was a symbol of faith, fortitude, and rising above adversity. She was Jane’s first friend and a guiding light even in her absence.
May your candle burn bright until we rise again,
Emily
